John Brady Kiesling left the Ancient History and Mediterranean Archaeology program of University of California at Berkeley for a diplomatic career, including two postings as a political officer in Athens Greece. After resigning from the State Department in 2003 (protesting the Iraq War), he resumed historical/archaeological research, most notably with the award-winning digital humanities tool ToposText (2015-present). His current focus includes mapping the monuments of ancient and modern Greece, with a gradual integration of ToposText named entities and also modern memorials into the Wikimedia open data ecosystem. His published books include Rediscovering Armenia, Diplomacy Lessons (2006), and Greek Urban Warriors (2014). He writes and lectures on modern politics, ancient religion, and their intersection.
